Martin Milmore monument by Daniel Chester French

The Martin Milmore monument by Daniel Chester French in Forest Hills Cemetery, Boston, is a classic memorial from one sculptor to another. Its title, "Death and the Sculptor," is taken from a poem by Milmore's sister that is cast in bronze at the monument's base. The sculpture was so well received, French was asked to reproduce it in marble for the Metropolitan Museum of art in New York City.

This is Milmore's sphinx monument to the Union dead of the Civil War in Mt Auburn Cemetery featured in the French sculpture.

This 1905 vase by Goldscheider Keramik (Austria) in the Everson Museum (Syracuse, NY) is labled "Sculptor(ess) with sphinx."
